The Municipality honored Alain Giordanetto by presenting him with the City Medal.

"This distinction crowns an exceptional forty-year career dedicated voluntarily to protecting the local environment and the safety of his fellow citizens, a commitment born in the heart of the trials the town faced," recalls Elie di Russo, honorary deputy mayor of the city of Hyères.

A commitment forged in the flames

It was in 1986, during the great fire of Les Borrels, that Alain Giordanetto's vocation took root. Faced with disaster, he decided to invest himself in the defense of the precious forests of Hyères. With the help of hunters, he set up a first surveillance group, laying the foundations for lasting action.

"This determination was confirmed three years later. In 1989, after the fire that devastated the hills of Plan-du-Pont, an estate he was then managing, he became a key player in reconstruction and prevention, working in collaboration with municipal services to create strategic Défense des Forêts Contre l'Incendie (DFCI) tracks, the famous DFCI No. 40 and No. 5, essential for emergency access. Alain Giordanetto's commitment then became structured and institutionalized. As soon as the Comité Communal Feux de Forêt (CCFF) was created in 1990, he became an active member, before joining the Réserve Communale de Sécurité Civile. His action then went far beyond the sole framework of fire fighting," continues Elie di Russo.

A tireless volunteer, he intervened on all fronts: during the floods that hit the region, but also following waterspouts, where he lent a hand to farmers in the painstaking collection of broken glass from their greenhouses.

His dedication was demonstrated by ensuring the security of numerous events organized by the city, becoming a familiar and reassuring figure. His contribution has also been recognized by his peers, as he is today an honorary member of the CCFF.

A discreet sentinel of the area

The former special deputy for Les Borrels resumes: "An owner near Plan-du-Pont, Alain Giordanetto has continued, over the years, to maintain almost constant surveillance of this sensitive sector and the surrounding municipal plots. Regularly patrolling the DFCI tracks he helped create, he played the role of a sentinel, reporting for example the numerous illegal dumpings that disfigure the landscape and present an environmental risk."

On the occasion of this medal presentation, a broader tribute was paid to all those who, on a daily basis, watch over the security of the territory: firefighters, all members of the protection and security services, farmers, and all citizens who mobilized to fight fires in Hyères and throughout France.
