On September 27, Françoise Dumont, Christian Simon, Frank Giletti and Carine Leroy were elected to the Sénat by the grand electors of the department.

The 2,348 registered grand electors were called to choose the four senators representing the territory at the Palais du Luxembourg for the years to come. Mobilization was strong, with 2,315 voters, representing a turnout rate of 98.6%.

In total, 2,288 votes were cast among the ballots of the eleven competing lists.

Two lists share the four seats

The ballot was dominated by two lists which won all the seats to be filled. The list "Unis pour l’Avenir de nos Communes et du Var" came first with 907 votes, representing 39.64% of the cast votes.

This score allowed it to elect its first two heads of list, Françoise Dumont (re-elected) and Christian Simon, mayor of La Crau.

In second place, the list "Au service des communes pour défendre le Var" received 691 votes, or 30.20% of the cast votes. It obtained two seats, which went to Frank Giletti and Carine Leroy.

A clear victory

On the day after the senatorial election, the republican right claimed a great victory. For Jean-Louis Masson, president of the Département and the local Les Républicains federation: "This success confirms the leadership of the republican right in Var. The party welcomes a result that solidifies its dominant position in the local and national political landscape. The grand electors of Var have very clearly expressed their choice."

For the leader of the LR of Var: "This electoral success goes beyond simple figures. I see in it the confirmation of the leadership of the republican right in the department of Var. This local performance is part of a broader national trend where the Les Républicains group retains its status as the leading political force in the Haute Assemblée."

"The LR group, with its center allies, still constitutes the senatorial majority, a counterweight deemed essential against the Assemblée nationale. I remain convinced that only a strong and coherent group in the Sénat usefully serves local authorities to weigh against the decisions of the Assemblée nationale."

He also highlights the good management of local finances, recalling that "the budget of local authorities is not in deficit and the French have understood this well! The newly elected senators therefore have the mission to carry this voice of the territories and to ensure their financial and institutional balances."

Positive evolution of the RN

For Stéphane Rambaud, député of Var: "This evening was an opportunity to welcome the election of Frank Giletti and Carine Leroy to the Sénat. Their election marks a new stage in the establishment of the Rassemblement National in institutions and territories."

"Beyond this election, it is a broader evolution of the RN's presence in local and national political life that deserves to be highlighted. Senatorial elections are a special event: they allow local elected officials to choose their representatives within the Haute Assemblée and thus give an important place to local anchoring."

"This new stage extends the work undertaken for several years on the ground: being present in the municipalities, meeting elected officials, listening to local concerns, and keeping a political representation alive within institutions."

"The arrival of new senators from the RN and the UDR contributes to this progress in the representation of the movement in Parliament. It also reflects the growing importance of local issues in national political debate: security, public services, rurality, purchasing power, regional planning, and the defense of municipalities are all subjects that find a concrete expression in parliamentary work."

A new balance of power in the Sénat

Following the elections, the balance of power in the Sénat should therefore evolve, notably with the formation of a Rassemblement National group. Granted, the earth will not shake at the Palais du Luxembourg, but a few tremors might well be felt.

After the vote of the 90,000 grand electors – which includes 95% of local elected officials – to renew half of the 348 senate seats, the balance of power should evolve.
