La 7ème armée américaine du général Patch, qui comprend les forces françaises commandées par de Lattre-de-Tassigny, arrive en vue des côtes dans la nuit du 14 au 15 août. Ce même soir, les Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI) reçoivent de Londres trois messages, dont le dernier « le chef est affamé » signifie le lancement des opérations. Le 15 août à 8h, les 3ème, 36ème et 45ème divisions d'infanterie américaines débarquent sur les plages entre Cavalaire et Saint-Raphaël. La veille, le 14 août, ce sont les Commandos d'Afrique qui débarquèrent au Rayol Canadel et au Lavandou afin de neutraliser les batteries ennemies. En ce jour de commémoration, Philippe Leonelli a rappelé : « Messieurs les représentants des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni, Cavalaire n'oubliera jamais le sang versé par vos enfants pour sa liberté et c'est pour cela que nous commémorons aujourd'hui la mémoire des soldats alliés qui tombèrent sous le feu de l'ennemi. En cette journée du 15 août 1944, pour toutes les Françaises, pour tous les Français, quelle joie, profonde, intense, inoubliable, quelle fierté que de voir l'armée de la France combattante engagée, aux côtés de ses alliés, pour la libération de notre territoire ! Comme le Général de Gaulle, Chef de la France libre, l'avait voulu, nos soldats furent au rendezvous de l'Histoire ». Under the orders of Generals Patch and de Lattre de Tassigny, galvanized by exceptional leaders, thousands and thousands of combatants set foot on the sand to open a new major front in the enemy setup. The 7th US Army of General Patch, which included the French forces commanded by de Lattre-de-Tassigny, came within sight of the coast on the night of August 14 to 15. That same evening, the Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI) received three messages from Londres, the last of which 'the chief is hungry' signified the launch of operations.
On August 15 at 8 a.m., the 3rd, 36th and 45th American infantry divisions landed on the beaches between Cavalaire and Saint-Raphaël. The day before, on August 14, the Commandos d'Afrique landed at Rayol Canadel and Le Lavandou in order to neutralize enemy batteries.
On this day of commemoration, Philippe Leonelli recalled: 'Representatives of the États-Unis and the Royaume-Uni, Cavalaire will never forget the blood shed by your children for its freedom, and that is why today we commemorate the memory of the allied soldiers who fell under enemy fire. On this day of August 15, 1944, for all French women, for all French men, what profound, intense, unforgettable joy, what pride to see the army of France combattante engaged, alongside its allies, for the liberation of our territory! As Général de Gaulle, Leader of France libre, had wanted, our soldiers kept their rendezvous with History.'
The Mayor added: 'A common ideal had transcended them, essential values had gathered them: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.
Equality! In the trial of fire, it was the very mark of the destiny of these same combatants. Equality in the face of fear, suffering, and death.
Equality also in honor and in glory. A glory won in Tunisie, as early as 1942, then in Sicile and Corse, the first liberated metropolitan department. A glory confirmed, and with what self-sacrifice, what tenacity, throughout the terrible campaign of Italie.
Fraternity at last! Brotherly pages were written during this Provence landing. Alongside these troops coming from the Sud, from the other side of the Méditerranée, that of arms, which bound together in a single impulse, under the same French flag, these combatants of all origins.'
UNFORGETTABLE DAY 'These brave soldiers came from the mainland and from all horizons of the Outre-Mer français. Young people from Algérie, Maroc and Tunisie, sons of Afrique occidentale or Afrique équatoriale, Madagascar or the océan Indien, Asie, Amérique or Territoires du Pacifique, all distinguished themselves magnificently in the battles for our Liberation. They would pay a very heavy price for victory.
Exemplary combatants, admirable in courage, audacity and loyalty, they were the tireless architects of victory.
We are gathered to pay tribute to all the combatants of this heroic epic. Since August 15, 1944, the wind of History has continued to blow. And yet, these tragic and glorious hours shared in trials and pain remain in our memories and in our hearts.
They sealed an indissoluble bond between us. Let us never forget those who fought to defend our freedom: generals, officers, soldiers of the French or allied troops, combatants and resistance fighters.
On this unforgettable day of August 15, 1944, on the varoises coasts, an unprecedented act of bravery and determination marked History and forever sealed the destiny of Freedom. Do the children playing and laughing in the waves and sand of the plage du Débarquement know that on an August night in 1944, other children cried out their pain as heroes? The sacrifice and commitment of all these men were the symbol of heroism and solidarity, paving the way for victory, peace, and respect.
