Food waste transformed into compost
A few weeks ago, Méditerranée Porte des Maures launched a food waste collection pilot scheme on its territory.
The experiment began at the start of spring. Ahead of this, the teams from the partner company "Les Alchimistes Côte d’Azur" installed future Voluntary Drop-off Points (PAV) in the municipalities of Bormes-les-Mimosas, Le Lavandou, La Londe-les-Maures, Collobrières, Pierrefeu-du-Var, and Cuers. Indeed, once deposited in the Voluntary Drop-off Points, food waste, also known as "bio-waste", is collected by the technical teams of the company "Les Alchimistes Côte d’Azur". It is then recovered as compost on a local platform located in Cuers. "The objective is twofold. It is about reducing the volume of household waste while contributing to environmental preservation," insists François de Canson. As part of this experiment, one to two collective Voluntary Drop-off Points were installed in each town in the Méditerranée Porte des Maures territory. However, this pilot phase involved a limited number of households per Voluntary Drop-off Point. During door-to-door days, teams from "Les Alchimistes Côte d’Azur" met with households selected by their respective municipalities. Furthermore, each household agreeing to participate in the experiment received an individual bio-bucket along with tailored sorting guidelines. This bio-bucket is used by residents to transport their food waste to the designated Voluntary Drop-off Point by "Les Alchimistes". In addition, launch events aimed at the targeted households were organized by municipal services, Méditerranée Porte des Maures, and "Les Alchimistes Côte d’Azur". These meetings allowed participants in this experiment to better understand the importance of source sorting and to leave with a bag of compost produced by "Les Alchimistes"!
