Le Lavandou: a roundabout named in honor of commando Pierre Velsch
On the occasion of the August 15, 1944 commemorations, a town roundabout was named after commando Pierre Velsch.
The commune fervently celebrated the anniversary of the Provence Landing, a key moment in the Liberation of France. The ceremonies were marked by a strong and symbolic gesture with the inauguration of a roundabout named after Pierre Velsch, an emblematic figure of the Commandos d’Afrique, whose memory remains vivid in the region.
Tributes to the Liberation
The day of commemoration began with a tribute ceremony at the square des Héros. In the presence of the mayor, Bertrand Carletti, his elected officials, and many personalities, including François de Canson, vice-president of the Région, the assembly saluted the courage of the 1944 fighters.
This moment of remembrance was followed by a military parade steeped in history. The "Provence 44" and "Mémoire de Bormes 44" associations, in period uniforms and vehicles, reenacted the atmosphere of the Liberation.

The procession, led by the Var fire brigade band, paraded through the town to the applause of the public, recalling the importance of the duty of memory.
A symbolic location
The highlight of the day was the naming ceremony of the roundabout located right in front of the Maison des Commandos d’Afrique. This area now bears the name of Pierre Velsch, perpetuating his legacy at the very heart of a place dedicated to his brothers-in-arms.
Emotion was palpable during the unveiling of the plaque. The event took place in the presence of the deceased's wife, Lucienne Velsch, accompanied by her son and grandchildren. The president of the Commandos, François Bonin, was also present to honor one of their own.
This moment of recognition, shared among the family, authorities, and patriotic associations, sealed in stone the commune's attachment to its liberators and to the memory of Pierre Velsch, a man whose commitment remains an example for future generations.
