Var, a pillar of France's rearmament
The Ministers of the Armed Forces and Labour signed a roadmap in Toulon to support the defense industry in Var.
Against the backdrop of France's accelerating rearmament, the Government is set to strengthen its industrial and technological base. This is why Catherine Vautrin, Minister of the Armées et des Anciens combattants, and Jean-Pierre Farandou, Minister of Travail et des Solidarités, were in Toulon on July 10.
In the presence of Yannick Chenevard, MP for Var, and François de Canson, Vice-President of the Région Sud, they signed a sector-specific roadmap entitled "Industrie de défense" for Var. This document confirms the department's pivotal role in the national sovereignty strategy.
The official ceremony was held at the Cercle naval de Toulon.
A sector for the future
"This roadmap aims to support the development of a sector considered essential for the country's strategic autonomy. The stakes are high for Var, described as the leading military department in France. The document aims to provide answers to the sector's challenges, particularly in terms of skills requirements, the creation of qualified jobs, and support for innovation," pointed out François de Canson.
He added: "The initiative is part of the prospect of a major industrial project for the Toulon region: hosting and building the future next-generation aircraft carrier. This structuring program will require an unprecedented mobilization of local expertise and a scaling up of the entire defense ecosystem, from major groups to subcontractors. The roadmap must pave the way to ensure that the local economic fabric is able to meet this demand and capture its benefits."
A collaborative effort
The document, signed by both ministers, is the result of several months of collaborative work.
It was drafted in consultation with all stakeholders: State services, local authorities, the armed forces, major industrial defense players, as well as research and training institutions.
This approach aimed to align strategies and pool efforts to strengthen French industrial sovereignty from its beating heart in Var.
