The National Day speech highlighted the future Naval Group site, a major project for sovereignty and the local economy.
The celebration of the National Day was marked by a solemn speech, oscillating between the poignant memory of past tragedies and the projection towards a future of hope and sovereignty.
While the ceremony was an opportunity to recall the foundations of the republican pact, it was also anchored in the future with the industrial project of Les Bormettes of national scale.
The rebirth of a historic industrial site
The future center of excellence of Naval Group is a symbol of renewal and ambition. "After more than thirty years of abandonment, this historic industrial site, founded in 1907, will be reborn. The works, which begin this year, materialize an investment of €140 million. This hub will be dedicated to advanced technologies: drones, autonomous systems, and underwater weapons. It is perceived as a major lever for the local economy, with the creation of qualified jobs and the attraction of engineers and researchers," recalled François de Canson.
Reindustrialization and environmental ambition
He added: "This center of excellence [...] embodies the reindustrialization of our country in service of national sovereignty. The project integrates strong environmental ambitions, with the installation of photovoltaic panels and an optimized management of resources, aiming for a 70% reduction in the carbon footprint compared to past activities."
A duty of memory in the face of national fractures
Previously, his speech had taken a strong memorial turn, evoking the tenth anniversary of the attack on the Promenade des Anglais, in Nice. A decade after the tragedy that claimed the lives of 86 people and injured hundreds, the emotion remains intact.
Beyond the tribute, the mayor made a lucid assessment of the challenges facing French society. Describing the period as a "country plagued by doubts and loss of bearings," the speech pointed to the fractures threatening the national bond: a justice system in difficulty, a "living together put to a severe test," and a normalization of violence and incivility.
A call to "remake national community"
In conclusion, François de Canson called to "remake national community" starting at the local level: "A nation never weakens in a single day. It weakens each time the bond uniting its citizens loosens. And this is indeed what obliges us today. There is an urgency."
