On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Marine nationale, the institution commemorated the Battle of the Chesapeake in Toulon, in the presence of Stéphane Rambaud and Yannick Chenevard, MPs for Var, as well as José Massi, mayor of Toulon.

Organized on September 5 as part of the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the Marine nationale, the ceremony took place at the invitation of Vice-Admiral Laurent Hermann, maritime prefect of the Méditerranée.

This event made it possible to link the memory of a glorious past with the reality of a modern navy focused on the challenges of the future, faithful to its motto.

A strategic victory in 1781

The Battle of the Chesapeake, which took place in 1781, is considered a strategic turning point in the United States War of Independence. The victory of the French fleet, commanded by Admiral de Grasse, made it possible to isolate the British forces in Yorktown and lead to their surrender, thus sealing American independence.

Stéphane Rambaud highlighted the importance of this historical heritage: "This battle, won in 1781 by the French fleet, was a decisive moment in our history."

This commemorative event is part of a broader context, that of the four centuries of existence of the Marine nationale. It was an opportunity to reaffirm the continuity of the mission of the French naval forces, from yesterday to today, serving the interests of France on all the world's seas.

A tribute to the women and men of the Navy

"Four centuries after the creation of our Marine nationale, this commemoration is an opportunity to measure the depth of our maritime history and our commitment to serving France," said MP Rambaud, who also insisted on the permanence of the values that drive the sailors.

"Through our sailors of yesterday and today, the same requirement continues: to serve, protect and defend our Nation and its interests, on all seas and wherever necessary," the MP for Var added.

He paid tribute to all the sailors who make up the Marine nationale, praising their daily commitment to ensuring the security and defense of the country, thus perpetuating a centuries-old tradition.
