In order to streamline daily travel and promote alternatives to individual cars, a multimodal interchange hub (PEM) project is being considered at the La Garde highway rest area, along the A57.

TPM and its partners have therefore launched a public consultation from September 1 to 30 to gather the opinions of residents, users, and local stakeholders on this strategic development.

The future La Garde interchange hub is designed to meet the heavy daily traffic flows, particularly those from the Gapeau valley and the municipalities east of the metropolitan area heading towards Toulon. Currently, although public transport lines run along this major axis, there is no infrastructure providing direct and easy access for users in the area.

A project serving metropolitan mobility

This project is part of a mobility strategy supported by the Métropole, aiming to encourage intermodality, carpooling, and the use of public transport. It complements the existing system, notably the Sainte-Musse multimodal interchange hub commissioned in 2025.

The objective is to offer new travel solutions to reduce automobile pressure on the territory and improve the quality of life for residents.

Comprehensive infrastructure

The project plans for the creation of infrastructure to facilitate the transition between different modes of transport. It will include two bus stops connected to the A57 highway, as well as a park-and-ride lot with spaces reserved for carpooling.

Particular attention will be paid to active mobility, with the creation of secure pedestrian and cycling paths accessible to people with reduced mobility. A dedicated footbridge will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the highway safely.

For traveler comfort, amenities such as shelters, restrooms, secure bicycle boxes, and real-time information displays are also planned. The surrounding roads and access points will be redeveloped to guarantee a harmonious integration of the hub into its environment.

The next steps of the project

At the end of this consultation period, a complete assessment of observations and proposals will be compiled.

This document, which will be approved by the préfet du Var, will summarize public contributions and serve as a basis to refine and guide the next steps of the project. The assessment will be made public and accessible online.
