On September 23, an amphibious helicopter carrier (PHA) of the Marine nationale set sail from Toulon to conduct a maritime security and cooperation mission.

The projection and command ship set course for the Golfe de Guinée where it is deployed as part of the CORYMBE 26 mission, an almost permanent operation of the French armed forces in this strategic area.

Carrying an embarked tactical group from the armée de Terre, the PHA illustrates France's joint force projection capability. Its deployment is part of a continuous effort to strengthen security in a maritime region crucial for international trade.

Training and Cooperation

The CORYMBE 26 mission is structured around two major highlights, co-organized by the Marine nationale and the member countries of the Architecture de Yaoundé, a regional cooperation framework for maritime safety.

The first component is the SIREN 26 course, standing for "embarked and digital regional training course". Designed as a true naval academy at sea, its aim is to strengthen the technical and tactical skills of partner navies in the region, while improving their interoperability with French forces.

The second major event is the large-scale exercise GANo 26 (Grand African NEMo 26). This maneuver aims to develop direct operational cooperation with the nations bordering the Golfe de Guinée. It allows for testing and improving the coordination of joint maritime safety actions, from combating piracy to fisheries policing.

Commitment and Objectives

This deployment confirms France's commitment to a region where multiple challenges intersect: protection of trade flows, respect for international law, and consolidation of strategic partnerships. The CORYMBE mission aims to maintain a visible and active maritime presence to deter illicit activities and reassure economic actors.

With this 26th edition, the Marine pursues its action alongside its African partners. The operation combines naval presence, operational cooperation, and shared training.

The objective is to contribute to a safer maritime area and to strengthen the capacity of coastal nations to ensure their own security by acting in a coordinated manner. This effort is essential for regional stability and freedom of navigation.
