Thus, a major exhibition dedicated to the artist is presented until next May 24 at La Banque, musée des Cultures et du Paysage in Hyères. La Banque welcomes, in partnership with the Institut Gustave Courbet of Ornans, an exceptional exhibition dedicated to one of the pioneers of realism in painting.

ESSENTIAL ROLE

Entitled “Du chant de la nature aux voix de la révolte”, this retrospective presents more than 120 works, objects, letters, archives, and vintage photographs. These pieces, signed by Gustave Courbet and his contemporaries, come from the Institut Gustave Courbet of Ornans, as well as from French museums and international private collections.

Gustave Courbet, born in 1819 in Ornans and deceased in 1877 in Switzerland, remains a highly relevant artist whose work continues to resonate in the world of contemporary art.

The Institut Courbet, born from a family's passion for the artist's work, plays an essential role in the rehabilitation of Courbet. In 1971, this family founded the Association des amis de Gustave Courbet and acquired his birthplace to turn it into a museum, which they then donated to the Département du Doubs in 1977.

This association aims to promote the work of Gustave Courbet and to support artistic culture in a free and independent spirit.

The Institut Gustave Courbet is the successor to the Association des Amis de Courbet, founded by the painter Robert Fernier, who acquired the artist's birthplace and opened the museum in 1971. The latter was then entrusted to the Département du Doubs in 1977, to guarantee its sustainability.

Sébastien Fernier, administrator of the Institut and coordinator of the Gustave Courbet committee, highlights the importance of rallying new members on the occasion of this exhibition.

“We wish to attract all lovers of Courbet’s art, whether they are Francs-Comtois or come from the four corners of France,” he declares.

The Institut needs support to continue operating and maintaining its premises in Ornans, especially since its funding relies largely on its own funds and the dedication of its volunteers, in addition to its two employees.

ORIGINAL ARTICLES

Membership in the Institut grants unlimited admission to the musée Gustave Courbet in Ornans, as well as an annual bulletin, the “Cahiers de l’Institut Courbet”, featuring original articles by historians and experts on the life and work of the artist. Furthermore, members will have access to various events organized by the Institut.

“Every membership is important to us,” insists Sébastien Fernier. In these difficult times, the Institut aspires to strengthen its ranks and establish contacts with patrons and collectors of Courbet’s work.
