The usually solemn enclosure of the Conseil municipal chamber vibrated with a new civic energy. Far from their classrooms, senior students from lycée du Coudon took part in a civic education operation by conducting the election of their delegates under the scrupulous conditions of a real ballot.

A lesson in democracy under real conditions

Ballot box, voting booths, attendance lists, and voter card: the entire republican protocol was meticulously recreated to offer these future citizens a concrete and memorable experience of democracy in action.

This educational initiative, designed within the framework of the Éducation morale et civique (EMC) course, transforms an internal high school procedure into a public event. Rather than a simple show of hands in class, the high school students followed a complete electoral process, from the candidates' campaign to the announcement of the results.

The objective is to demystify the voting process and give shape to institutional concepts sometimes perceived as abstract by young people. By becoming familiar with the gestures and rituals of voting, these students gain a tangible understanding of the rights and duties that will soon be theirs.

Anchoring theory in civic practice

This project is the result of a long-standing collaboration between the Municipalité and lycée du Coudon. As Céline Muréna, deputy mayor delegated to education, points out, the links between the two institutions are historic. In response to a request from the young people themselves, who had expressed their desire to understand how to get involved in the life of their city, the Municipalité seized this opportunity to strengthen its educational role.

Driven by the commitment of two teachers, Mme Verdier, history-geography and EMC teacher, and Mme Berthoud, teacher-librarian, the initiative aimed to go beyond theoretical teaching. The educational team wished to create a more personal and engaging civic event.

By making the election of delegates a formal civic act, they intended to make a lasting impression and awaken a political consciousness among these young people who, for the most part, will vote for the first time during the next national elections. The ambition is to make these students informed and responsible citizens.
