Forest Fires – Var Senator Françoise DUMONT Commissioned by the Government
The Senator of Var, Françoise Dumont, has been appointed by the Prime Minister to propose new measures to combat forest fires.
Faced with the intensification of fire risks, the government is strengthening its strategy of anticipation and response. By a Decree of the Prime Minister published in the Journal Officiel on August 11, 2026, the Senator of Var, Françoise Dumont, was entrusted with a major temporary mission. She will be responsible for proposing new provisions for the future bill to modernize civil security, covering the entire spectrum: anticipation, prevention, preparedness, response, and post-disaster reconstruction.
This appointment comes as the feedback analysis of the 2026 summer season is underway, and the need to adapt resources and strategies to future climate challenges becomes a national imperative.
Recognized expertise in civil security
The choice of Françoise Dumont to lead this strategic reflection is no accident. Her background bears witness to a long-standing commitment to safety and rescue issues. Notably, she chaired for several years the board of directors of the SDIS of Var, a department highly exposed to the risk of forest fires.
Since 2020, she has also served as Senate Rapporteur for opinion on budgets dedicated to "civil security" within the framework of finance bills. Her expertise is further complemented by her position as Vice-President of the CNSIS, a key body in the governance of firefighters in France.
A collective and cross-party parliamentary mission
The senator will not work alone. She will conduct this mission in collaboration with a group of six other parliamentarians, reflecting the desire for a cross-party and bicameral approach. This group is composed of deputies Sophie Panonacle, Sophie Pantel, Didier Lemaire, and Jean-Louis Thieriot, as well as senators Olivier Bitz and Pascal Martin.
Their first task will be to conduct an in-depth analysis of the events of the 2026 fire season to draw concrete lessons. On this basis, they must formulate ambitious and operational proposals to adapt legislation and relief systems to the risks of coming years. Their conclusions will directly feed into the bill to modernize civil security.
