From August 18, Allied bombers repeatedly attacked the Saint-Mandrier peninsula, a place of entrenchment for the Germans. The harbor and the city of Toulon experienced an intensive bombing campaign by the Allies. On August 23, resistance fighters and Allied liberators met in the city center of Toulon, which was liberated three days later after intense fighting. On August 28, the capitulation of Rear Admiral Ruhfus, who had taken refuge in the fortifications of Saint-Mandrier, marked the liberation of the harbor of Toulon. By September 25, 1944, more than 324,000 soldiers, 68,000 vehicles, and 490,000 tons of supplies had been landed, and 4,259 sorties were carried out on August 15 by the Allied air force. This record illustrates the success of the preparation and execution of the Débarquement en Provence. Indeed, in the strategic ports of Marseille and Toulon, German forces had received orders to hold out to the last cartridge. Once liberated, they would play a logistical and strategic role in supplying the Allied armies, as more than 900,000 men and 4 million tons of equipment passed through them until 1945.
