A new cultural life for All Saints Church
The Anglican church of Costebelle is receiving financial support from the 7th edition of the Mission Patrimoine lottery, launched on September 2.
The grant, to be revealed at the end of the year, will contribute to the restoration and preservation of this 19th-century church which, after restoration, will host cultural events. Indeed, this Anglican church was a private property for a long time. It was bought by the municipality of Hyères on December 18, 2013. However, successive failures of the owners over recent decades have led this church to a severe state of decay. Today, access is prohibited and the building is closed to the public. The City wishes to restore this venue to host cultural events (meetings and exhibitions).
HERITAGE OF THE VICTORIAN ERA
A museographical presentation will be available there, highlighting the English interest in Hyères and the impact of this community on local heritage, in particular the visit in March 1892 of Queen Victoria, sovereign of Great Britain. Located in the heart of Costebelle, the church bears witness to the era when the English, attracted by the mild winter climate, enjoyed a prestigious resort within an exceptional environment. Built in a neo-gothic style, the building displays the architectural characteristics of Victorian-era churches, as evidenced by its pointed arches and soaring vaults.
The work is planned in three phases:
Emergency work: consolidation of masonry structures, construction of a contemporary framework, and restoration of the floors.
Restoration work: installation of a tiled roof for waterproofing, restoration of stained-glass windows.
Development work: creation of modular elements for the future hall, landscaping of the surroundings, and PRM access. Start of work in November 2024. End of work in November 2025.
