The Unité de Médecine et de Traumatologie du Sport, a structure of excellence
On December 4, Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal Toulon – La Seyne-sur-Mer opened its new Unité de Médecine et de Traumatologie du Sport premises.
The UMTS premises are centralized on level 2 of the MCO building at the Sainte Musse hospital in Toulon. Directed by Dr Jean-Jacques Raymond and integrated into the Surgery department under the responsibility of Dr Pierre-Olivier Fais, UMTS has established itself over several years as a regional reference center for the monitoring and treatment of athletes. The unit supports many sports clubs in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, such as RCT Association, HTV, and many others.
It also ensures the monitoring of high-level athletes, recognized nationally and internationally, as well as amateur or non-registered athletes, in an approach of openness and inclusivity.
INNOVATIVE CARE UMTS offers structured and personalized monitoring, adapted to the specific needs of athletes. Thus, for registered athletes, this involves specialized medical monitoring to optimize their performance and prevent injuries. The unit also includes a dedicated medical-surgical care pathway and offers rapid access to specialized consultations, imaging, and specific treatments.
For non-registered athletes and amateur patients, this translates into support identical to that offered to professional athletes and care extended to patients who do little or no sport, highlighting UMTS's desire to promote health for all.
In addition, the unit relies on a multidisciplinary team and modern infrastructure organized around specialized consultations, functional explorations, technical procedures (infiltrations, ultrasound-guided treatments, PRP injections, etc.), as well as dietetics and performance optimization. It has built a sports performance identity thanks to its comprehensive approach combining medical expertise, innovative techniques, and personalized care.
REFURBISHMENT OF PREMISES For greater efficiency, a grouping of the UMTS premises was carried out in 2024 and consisted of creating a secretarial office near the medical consultation rooms for making appointments, follow-ups, etc. In detail, the work made it possible to refurbish a sanitary area with a shower for bodily hygiene reasons after exertion on testing equipment, to set up two medical consultation offices and a nursing station, and finally, to adapt a room for the BOD POD equipment which determines body composition (fat and fat-free mass) according to the whole-body densitometry principle. For the UMTS premises, the cost of the work, which lasted 3.5 months, is approximately €130,000 including tax.
