An agreement between the Ville de Toulon and the Théâtre Liberté

The Ville de Toulon and the Théâtre Liberté have signed an agreement to bring culture closer to the residents. The 3-year agreement was signed by Josée Massi, mayor of Toulon, and Charles Berling, director of the Théâtre Liberté. "Because the Ville de Toulon and the Théâtre Liberté, certified as a Scène Nationale, share this common desire to bring culture closer to the residents by investing in various Toulon neighborhoods, the two structures have signed an agreement binding them for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Each annual project will be carried out in connection with the current facilities and actors of the neighborhood, whether municipal or community-based. The objectives are to promote culture for all and to reach out to audiences, to encourage exchange with residents, the discovery of and introduction to cultural practices, as well as to lead projects that develop residents' interest in culture," explained Josée Massi.

ARTIST RESIDENCY Concretely, each year, the project will take the form of an artist residency established in a defined location in order to involve residents in the presentation or even the construction of a major event for the general public. For a first experience, the Sainte-Musse neighborhood was chosen. In November, the Basinga company took over the site.

Different workshops (tightrope walking, characters and costumes, photos, or music) invited the public to participate in the creation of the show. It was a tightrope performance in the public space, at a great height (between 15 and 50 meters high over a variable length). It was made possible thanks to the participation of around a hundred volunteers and the involvement of an entire neighborhood.

The performance combined the monumental scale with the intimate nature of the encounter, offering a new perspective on living spaces, stimulating collective imaginations and calling for people to come together.

TWO EXHIBITIONS TO SEE CURRENTLY IN TOULON: RITA PARKER Rita Parker is a visual photographer and video artist. She manually reworks her photographs by drawing on the prints. Wandering and nomadism guide her research.

The line and the circle are her rhetoric. The Marseille artist offers a unique and multifaceted installation within the walls of the Maison de la Photographie. She uses still and moving images and drawing to link space and time.

Guided tours are offered for all audiences and school groups.

Exhibition until February 15 Maison de la Photographie Rue Nicolas Laugier Place du Globe – Toulon. Free admission. Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 6pm. Closed on Mondays and public holidays.

ON THE TRAIL OF THE DRAGON The Asian dragon symbolises protection, perseverance, and prosperity. The MAA offers a chance to discover or rediscover its Asian art collections through a selection of objects and works representing or depicting the legendary animal, originating from China but also from Japan, Tibet, and Southeast Asia, from the Bronze Age to the 19th century. Temporary exhibition until January 25.
