Created in 2018, the Garde Régionale Forestière is part of the 'Plan Climat régional' and more particularly at the heart of its 'Guerre du Feu' initiative in order to preserve natural environments and prevent fire risks. The Région has mobilized more than –35 million in this initiative since 2018. 'This year, it has once again invested –1.8 million, like last year, for the Garde Régionale Forestière,' recalled François de Canson, vice-president of the Région in charge of major risks.
FROM JUNE 1ST TO SEPTEMBER 15TH The Garde Régionale Forestière plays an essential role in fire prevention. Thus, it develops a culture of fire risk among the resident or transient population visiting the forest massifs. It strengthens the capacities of regional stakeholders in terms of prevention, information, awareness, and fire risk on the outskirts of natural and forest areas from June 1st to September 15th, a period when the fire risk is most severe.
'Before taking up their duties in the different massifs of the r gion Sud, the young volunteers undergo several qualifying training sessions, including theoretical training on the forest and its stakeholders, to discover the fundamentals of biodiversity, forest management, prevention, and fighting forest fires,' added François de Canson. The young people also benefit from personalized field training to familiarize themselves with their future environment and 'conflict management and mediation' training.
'The recruited young people are very often male and female students, but not always. They are people who love nature and are interested in it. Some return from one year to the next because they like this experience and above all they feel they are giving meaning to their action.
It is also a mission that requires a sense of responsibility because constant vigilance is needed. You must therefore be serious,' adds the mayor of La Londe-les-Maures.
This initiative complements the 'Guerre du feu' plan, which has made it possible to equip the Var with a p licandrome in Hyres and to be much more effective in tackling starting fires.
