200 police officers and 150 gendarmes as reinforcements this summer

Var is the leading tourist department in France (excluding Île-de-France) with a population that doubles during the summer. Throughout the summer season, all State services are mobilized to fight against offenses against people and property, ensure respect for public peace, and protect Var consumers and holidaymakers.

State services thus contribute to promoting the professionalization of economic players and improving the quality of services offered to the many visitors welcomed in our department. Prevention and control actions aimed at protecting users and citizens are organized around 6 themes: public safety, civil security, road safety, health and food safety, transaction security, and civil protection.

TERROR ATTACK RISK

Dans le contexte du risque attentat, la présence de la police et de la gendarmerie est renforcée face à la fréquentation touristique. Et, comme chaque année, la direction interdépartementale de la Police Nationale (DIPN 83) du Var bénéficie d’un renfort avec 15 policiers dont 14 pour les unités de police secours et 1 pour une unité BAC du 11 juillet au 20 août, 2 compagnies républicaines de sécurité (CRS), assignées à l’Est et à l’Ouest du Var, 4 motocyclistes CRS (UMZ) du 11 juillet au 20 août, 11 maîtres-nageurs sauveteurs (Six-Fours-les-Plages et Saint- Raphaël) du 1er juillet au 31 août. De son côté, le groupement de gendarmerie reçoit le renfort de 50 réservistes opérationnels entre le 1er et le 16 juillet, 20 réservistes et une compagnie de marche de 50 militaires entre le 17 juillet et le 24 août, 25 réservistes entre le 25 août et le 4 septembre, 19 maîtres-nageurs sauveteurs (7 au Lavandou, 4 à la Londe-les- Maures et 8 à Ramatuelle) du 1er juillet au 31 août. En outre, le groupement de gendarmerie va déployer 3 postes provisoires, 2 brigades nautiques côtières, et 1 poste à cheval du 18 juillet au 31 août. Enfin, des militaires de l’opération Sentinelle patrouilleront sur la frange littorale en coordination avec les équipages de la DIPN du Var. •

BEACH PATROLS AND SECURING OF FESTIVITIES

Preventive measures are implemented for beach surveillance, with a dynamic presence and increased monitoring on days and times of high population concentration. The securing of summer festivities and bodies of water is ensured by the nautical brigades of the gendarmerie and the Unité nautique départementale of the police nationale of Var.

OPÉRATION TRANQUILLITÉ VACANCES

As part of the action plan to fight burglaries, the 'Opération Tranquillité Vacances' campaign is renewed for the summer holidays. Police and gendarmerie services can, upon request, monitor a home or business during their daily patrols. In 2024, 589 people reported their absence to the police nationale, including 209 for the summer period (July and August). No home included in this scheme was burgled.

FOREST FIRE PREVENTION

Public attendance during the summer period is an aggravating factor for the risk of forest fires. State services are mobilizing to prevent them and fight against arson. The direction départementale des territoires et de la mer (DDTM) pilots a surveillance system for forest massifs from the PC forêt based in Le Muy, and coordinates its system with that of the comités communaux feux de forêt (CCFF) and with that of the service départemental d’incendie et de secours (SDIS).

HEATWAVE MANAGEMENT

The departmental management plan for a heatwave in Var aims to anticipate the arrival of a heatwave, to define the actions to be implemented at the local level to limit its health effects, and to adapt prevention and management measures at the territorial level, paying particular attention to at-risk populations. The plan has four levels of severity: 'seasonal watch' (level 1), 'heat warning' (level 2), 'heatwave alert' (level 3), and 'maximum mobilization' (level 4).
