A traveling museum to pass history on to younger generations
It is the first traveling museum in Var dedicated to the Débarquement de Provence.
Named "Robert Chiazzo" in tribute to a veteran, this first-of-its-kind museum was launched in the presence of numerous elected officials and civil and military authorities of Var. To inaugurate this unique initiative, Jean-Louis Masson, president of the Département, was accompanied by Philippe Leonelli, departmental councillor and mayor of Cavalaire-sur-Mer, officer in charge of the Débarquement de Provence, and Hélène Arnaud-Bill, mayor of La Garde. Marking one of the missions of this mobile museum, namely passing history on to younger generations, the ceremony was held alongside a school visit by students from the collège de La Garde.
EDUCATIONAL MISSION Housed in an authentic American command trailer dating from the also decisive for the liberation of France. This traveling museum serves as a reminder of the scale of this historic event and raises awareness among future generations of its importance. • World War II, the traveling museum offers an immersive and educational dive into the history of the Allied Débarquement in Provence, which took place in August 1944.
Period documents, military objects, photographs, and soldiers' accounts illustrate this important chapter of the liberation of the south of France. "This traveling museum was designed by the Mémoire de Bormes 1944 association, with the ambition of making history accessible to as many people as possible, and especially to middle and high school students of Var. Through interactive museography and tailored scenography, it aims to awaken young people's historical curiosity and maintain the duty of remembrance," explains Philippe Leonelli.
The mayor of Cavalaire added: "It is a project with a strong symbolic and educational dimension. It is not only about not forgetting, but also about explaining and passing on. The museum will accompany official commemorations and participate in many cultural or patriotic events throughout the territory of Var."
FINANCIAL SUPPORT Aware of the importance of this initiative for collective memory, the Département provided financial support of €20,000 to the association leading the project. This commitment was welcomed by the elected officials and association representatives present, who recalled the essential role of public institutions in preserving local history. Thus, by moving from town to town, from school to school, the "Robert Chiazzo" museum contributes to keeping the memory of the Débarquement de Provence alive, an episode often less known than that of Normandie, but just as Historical context: On the evening of August 15, 1944, Allied forces launched a major operation to liberate the south of France.
The German army, under the command of Général Wiese, included 2,500 men scattered along the coast, defended by bunkers, minefields, and more than 550 cannons. On September 23, 1944, more than 4,900 vehicles and 4,000 tons of equipment landed. Allied aviation carried out 4,250 planned missions, contributing to the liberation of the coasts of Toulon and Marseille.
