The Cap Garonne mine, perched above the Méditerranée, offers a unique experience combining an exceptional panorama over the bay of Toulon and underground adventures. This museum, already visited by more than 30,000 people in 2024, is one of the must-see sites of the Var. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., this year it is extending its fabulous exhibition on piracy in the Méditerranée.
A NATURAL SETTING Located in the heart of a protected forest massif, the mine proudly overlooks the turquoise waters of the Méditerranée. These former copper galleries, now restored, are among the most beautiful mineralogical sites in the world. No fewer than 133 different minerals, some of extreme rarity, have been identified there.
Just a few kilometres from Toulon, a journey through time awaits visitors, combining fascinating geology, local history, and underground immersion. Young and old alike can let themselves be guided through these depths of the earth, a true playground for the curious and nature lovers.
Thus, visitors can dive into the captivating world of the pirates of the Méditerranée, with an original exhibition that blends history, legend, and art. Following in the footsteps of the famous pirate Barberousse, discovering the potter's secrets, and setting off in search of the Treasure of Cap Garonne, aboard a mysterious boat stranded at the bottom of the mine, are just some of the adventures on offer. The exhibition is enriched by astonishing and luminous artistic installations designed by the ALBA association, including fluorescent pirate faces that spellbind visitors.
To extend the experience, a panoramic terrace and a brand-new souvenir shop await visitors at the exit.
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Awarded the "Esprit Parc" label, the museum is part of an eco-responsible approach, in partnership with the Parc national de Port-Cros. Christian Garnier, president of the museum, specifies: "This label promotes structures that commit to the preservation of natural sites and public awareness. The Mine de Cap Garonne is an active relay for the actions of the Parc."
With a capacity voluntarily limited to 100 visitors for 6,000 m², the mine offers a comfortable, environmentally friendly visit accessible all year round, whatever the weather.
Labellisé « Esprit Parc », le musée s’inscrit dans une démarche éco-responsable, en partenariat avec le Parc national de Port-Cros. Christian Garnier, président du musée, précise : « Ce label valorise les structures qui s’engagent dans la préservation des sites naturels et la sensibilisation du public. La Mine de Cap Garonne est un relais actif des actions du Parc ». Avec une capacité volontairement limitée à 100 visiteurs pour 6000 m2, la mine propose une visite confortable, respectueuse de l’environnement et accessible tout au long de l’année, quelle que soit la météo.
