In August, Var commemorated the 81st anniversary of the Libération

The official procession started from Place d’Armes, then headed towards the plaque dedicated to the memory of Jean Moulin on the facade of the central police station, then towards the monument erected in memory of Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny before reaching the Monument aux Morts on Place Gabriel Péri. Starting from August 18, 1944, Allied bombers repeatedly attacked the Saint-Mandrier peninsula, a German stronghold. The harbor and the city experienced an intensive bombing campaign by the Allies. On August 23, 1944, resistance fighters and Allied liberators reached downtown Toulon, which was liberated three days later after intense fighting. On August 28, 1944, the capitulation of contre-amiral Ruhfus, who had taken refuge in the fortifications of Saint-Mandrier, marked the liberation of the Toulon harbor. Finally, other ceremonies were also held a few days earlier in the towns of the Métropole TPM, notably in La Valette-du-Var and La Garde.
