The soul of the Commandos d’Afrique, 80 years later!

Eight decades after its creation, the spirit of fraternity and transmission remains intact. Before the opening, François Bonin, president of the Amicale, paid tribute to those who serve daily—military personnel, gendarmes and police officers, medical staff, prison guards, teachers, and elected representatives of the Republic, who are sometimes targeted. Then, the names of those who passed away during the year were read, and a minute of silence united all hearts.

BORN IN FIRE IN 1945

Créée en pleine guerre le 1er janvier 1945 (publication au JO du 23 février 1945), la « Maison du Commando » avait pour mission d’aider les blessés à se relever physiquement et moralement. Son premier siège fut l’hôtel La Calanque au Lavandou, une plaque restaurée rappelle aujourd’hui cette histoire. Le siège s’établit ensuite à Cavalière (Cap Nègre), probablement chez le commandant Farraggi, puis à Paris, avant de revenir au Lavandou. En novembre 1945, à Alger, les figures historiques L’Hostis, Aquilina, Wibrecht et Bonin jetèrent les bases de l’Amicale Régimentaire actuelle. L’entraide y était totale, Marocains, Algériens, Tunisiens, « quelle que soit la couleur de leur peau ». Il ne reste aujourd’hui, à la connaissance de l’Amicale, qu’un seul Commando d’Afrique vivant. Il s'agit du docteur Jean Cornuau, jeune médecin engagé en avril 1945, toujours fidèle malgré ses 100 ans. Cette fidélité se transmet. Les enfants, petits-enfants et arrière-petitsenfants d’anciens étaient nombreux ce jeudi 14 août. « Soyez les bienvenus, vous êtes ici chez vous, dans votre famille », a lancé François Bonin. Dans la salle, les souvenirs circulent : fanion, képi, le drapeau nazi du fort du Coudon, confié par la fille du colonel Guillaume en 2024, et un film reconstituant la réunion du colonel Bouvet avant l’attaque de Belfort, offert par l’association Mémoire du Lion.

REMEMBRANCE IN ACTION

From the Vosges to Alsace and up to the Rhin, the Commandos d’Afrique fought decisive battles. Thus, Belfort was liberated on November 20, 1944. At the end of 2024, a delegation from the Amicale took part in the 80th-anniversary commemorations. In Cernay, after extensive research, a forgotten stele in the Bois d’Arsot (where 75 commandos perished) was found and restored thanks to the Jeunes Sapeurs-Pompiers (JSP) and municipal services, with a new plaque to ensure their memory lives on. Thanks to the support of the towns (Le Lavandou, Bormes-les-Mimosas, La Londe-les-Maures), the Département, the Région, and the FNAM, the pennant of the Commandos d’Afrique is present at every patriotic ceremony. The Amicale particularly salutes Corinne Bianchi, a faithful pennant-bearer, and all those who take turns to keep this presence alive.

The salle d’honneur, open on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., welcomes donations and archives throughout the year. In particular, it screens the film on the preparation for the attack on Belfort. The choral narrative dedicated to the Commandos, led by Michel Baudet (son of Sgt-chef Jean Baudet, wounded at the Coudon), is underway, inspired by real-life testimonies. Also of note is the book by Raphaëlle Duchemin, "De l’ombre à la lumière", the Var from 1939 to 1945, which retraces the Débarquement and the epic journey of the Commandos d’Afrique. "The Commandos d’Afrique wrote a part of our shared history with their blood," concluded François Bonin, praising the colossal work of general secretary Yves Boyer and treasurer Patrice Caserio. •
