Jean-Pierre Savelli's beautiful tribute to Michel Legrand
On August 2, in the enchanting 'Un soir au jardin' setting, Jean-Pierre Savelli paid a vibrant tribute to Michel Legrand at Espace Beaudouvin.
ENCHANTING SETTING This tribute concert, bringing together nearly 500 people, was part of an artistic journey where emotion, respect, and transmission blended perfectly. A look back at an evening where the voice of a great performer brought the most beautiful music of French cinema back to life.
“I didn't see myself singing in a garden at first, but I think it's great.” The Jardin Remarquable de Baudouvin, a natural and poetic setting, offered soft acoustics and a rare closeness with the audience. The atmosphere, both elegant and warm, allowed for a sincere communion between the artist and his audience.
A rich repertoire, between classics and rarities, and a performance inhabited by history. With 55 years of career behind him, Jean-Pierre Savelli did not just sing Michel Legrand's repertoire — he delivered an inhabited, emotional, almost filial interpretation of it. From the very first notes of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, the audience is swept away on a musical odyssey with nostalgic tones.
He followed with Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and Peau d'Âne, a cult work in which he lent his voice to Jacques Perrin, before moving on to poignant ballads like Les Moulins de mon cœur and L'Été 42. The highlight remains without a doubt Paris Violon, a discreet track he had not revisited in over half a century.
“It's crazy, 50 years later, here I am singing Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Peau d'Âne. I hadn't touched them since 1972,” he confides with great emotion. Each piece thus became the echo of a precious past, and of an artistic complicity that still resounds in every measure.
BETWEEN JAZZ AND SONG Accompanied by young musicians from the Sud, Jean-Pierre Savelli opted for a “jazzified” approach without excess: “It's not completely jazz... I don't want any jazz solos. It's the song jazzified.”
The choice of these local, talented, and committed musicians shows a desire for transmission: “We are putting young guys to work. That's important too.”
A sincere tribute, an intact voice, and a rare elegance: Jean-Pierre Savelli proved, once again, that great melodies never grow old — they are passed on. After this successful premiere, Jean-Pierre Savelli continued his tour in Bretagne, before returning on August 29 to La Valette-du-Var to present “Les Décennies”, a show produced by his wife, retracing the 50s to the 2000s with 14 artists on stage, costumes, lookalikes, and transformists.
“There is Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, two transformists... It's a real show.” Note that La Gazette du Var and Presse Agence accompanied Jean-Pierre Savelli throughout the summer with a six-episode series retracing his journey, his inspirations, and his secrets.
« Je ne me voyais pas au départ chanter dans un jardin, mais je trouve ça super ». Le Jardin Remarquable de Baudouvin, écrin naturel et poétique, a offert une acoustique douce et une proximité rare avec le public. L’ambiance, à la fois élégante et chaleureuse, a permis une communion sincère entre l’artiste et son auditoire. Un répertoire riche, entre classiques et raretés, et une interprétation habitée par l’histoire. Fort de ses 55 années de carrière, Jean-Pierre Savelli ne s’est pas contenté de chanter le répertoire de Michel Legrand — il en a livré une interprétation habitée, émotionnelle, presque filiale. Dès les premières notes des Parapluies de Cherbourg, le public est embarqué dans une odyssée musicale aux accents nostalgiques. Il enchaîne avec Les Demoiselles de Rochefort et Peau d’Âne, œuvre culte dans laquelle il avait prêté sa voix à Jacques Perrin, avant de glisser vers les ballades poignantes comme Les Moulins de mon cœur et L’Été 42. Le moment fort reste sans doute Paris Violon, un titre discret qu’il n’avait pas revisité depuis plus d’un demi-siècle. « C’est fou, 50 ans après, me voilà à chanter Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Peau d’Âne. Je ne les avais pas touchées depuis 1972 », confie-t-il avec beaucoup d’émotion. Chaque morceau devenait ainsi l’écho d’un passé précieux, et d’une complicité artistique qui résonne encore dans chaque mesure.
“They are really with us. Since the beginning, they have been helping us. It's incredibly important,” declares Jean-Pierre Savelli.
Accompagné de jeunes musiciens du Sud, Jean-Pierre Savelli a opté pour une approche « jazzifiée » sans excès : « Ce n’est pas complètement jazz... Je ne veux pas de solo de jazz. C’est la chanson jazzifiée ». Le choix de ces musiciens locaux, talentueux et engagés, témoigne d’une volonté de transmission : « On fait travailler des jeunes mecs. C’est important aussi ». Un hommage sincère, une voix intacte, et une élégance rare : Jean-Pierre Savelli a prouvé, une fois encore, que les grandes mélodies ne vieillissent jamais — elles se transmettent. Après cette première réussie, Jean-Pierre Savelli a poursuivi sa tournée en Bretagne, avant de revenir le 29 août à La Valette-du-Var, pour présenter « Les Décennies », spectacle monté par son épouse, retraçant les années 50 à 2000 avec 14 artistes sur scène, costumes, sosies et transformistes. « Il y a Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, deux transformistes... C’est un vrai spectacle ». À noter que La Gazette du Var et Presse Agence ont accompagné Jean-Pierre Savelli tout au long de l’été avec une série de six épisodes retraçant son parcours, ses inspirations et ses confidences. « Ils sont vraiment avec nous. Depuis le début, ils nous aident. C’est vachement important » déclare Jean-Pierre Savelli.
