The new SITTOMAT center to be commissioned in late 2026

However, glass, aluminum, and plastics are still highly present in household waste. This is why local authorities are investing in the modernization of sorting centers, as is the case in La Farlède, where the new SITTOMAT sorting center will be commissioned at the end of late 2026. Elsewhere in the department, Valeor Pizzorno in Le Muy is supported by Citeo in optimizing its industrial layout to achieve higher performance. In terms of waste sorting, performance is improving in the Région Sud. Indeed, in 2024, residents sorted an average of 56.3 kg of household packaging and paper, with an 8% increase in light packaging. Thus, with results closer to the national average, Var reaches 73.5 kg.

PURSUING THE EFFORTS

Toutefois, cette performance reste inférieure à la moyenne nationale (72 kg), ce qui souligne la nécessité de poursuivre les efforts pour capter les emballages encore nombreux dans les ordures ménagères (environ 88 kg par habitant). Par ailleurs, il existe des disparités selon les matériaux et les départements. Ainsi, sur les 56,3 kg d’emballages et de papiers triés en moyenne par habitant en 2024, 20,3 kg sont des emballages légers (acier, aluminium, carton, plastique) soit une progression de 8 % par rapport à 2023. Avec une forte hausse du captage des cartons (+12 %) et des films plastiques. Et, 26,4 kg concernent des emballages en verre, mais avec une performance de tri qui stagne. Enfin, 9,6 kg collectés sont des papiers graphiques, en baisse également de 13 % par rapport à 2023. Un résultat est à mettre en lien avec la forte baisse des quantités mises en marché liée aux nouveaux usages numériques (-23 %).

TERRITORIES IN ACTION

For elected officials, collective mobilization therefore remains essential to improve this performance. Indeed, the initial analyses of the 2024 household waste characterization campaign reveal a significant source of glass, plastic, and aluminum packaging that is still unsorted. Yet, in the Région Sud, territories are taking action to improve sorting performance, both in terms of optimization and the deployment of sorting systems. Thus, in 2024, Citeo supported the mobilization of local authorities in its Calls for Projects to increase and densify sorting systems. In Var, SITTOMAT was selected to continue providing sorting points, develop the separate collection of cardboard and glass, and communicate sorting rules to users. Mobilization continues in 2025 with new applications for our Calls for Projects. By 2026-2027, these projects will strengthen the regional capacity for sorting packaging and paper.
