What is your background?

I am 23 years old and originally from the Drôme. I have been assigned to the Centre National d’Instruction Nautique de la Gendarmerie since April 3, 2025. Before joining the gendarmerie, I obtained my BAC and a BTS Management Commercial Opérationnel.

What prompted you to become a Gendarme Adjoint Volontaire?

I wanted to join the gendarmerie to make myself useful and protect the population. I have always been motivated by the military aspect represented by the gendarmerie. This profession also allows one to discover new and different sectors of activity, an aspect that I also really liked.

How did your training go?

My training as a GAV began with individual sports training to prepare me for what might await me at school. I then joined the gendarmerie school of Montluçon for a 3-month training course that was divided into two parts, the first related to the military aspect and the second related to the gendarmerie.

Why did you choose a specialized unit rather than a traditional unit?

In my opinion as a GAV, it is important to explore the diversity of professions that the gendarmerie offers us. I seized this opportunity to discover a sector I didn't really know and to find my vocation in the profession of gendarmerie diver.

What does a typical day look like in your unit?

A typical day at the Centre National d’Instruction Nautique de la Gendarmerie is generally organized with one dive in the morning and another in the afternoon, depending on the training courses in progress. As a GAV, I pilot the zodiac, ensure the safety of the divers, and make sure that the necessary equipment is effective to act in all circumstances.

What would you say to a young person who is hesitant to join the gendarmerie as a GAV?

I would tell them to go for it because it is a way to gain experience, which helps us know if this profession is right for us or not. As a GAV, we learn a great deal on the ground, which is also an asset for later applying to take the sous-officier exam.
