Espace Albert-Camus: A major technical and energetic renovation
The City has launched the rehabilitation of Espace Albert-Camus, a vast €17.7M project scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2029.
This is a major, structuring project taking shape for the municipality of La Valette-du-Var. Following a project management competition launched in April 2025, which saw 40 applications compete, the winning team was chosen last January to carry out the rehabilitation of the Espace culturel Albert-Camus. This ambitious project aims to modernize this central facility, both from an energy and functional standpoint, while redefining the site's uses.
BRINGING THE PARKING LOT INTO COMPLIANCE The work program, for which design studies began in March, focuses primarily on the long-term durability of the building. The basic scope includes the complete resealing of the buildings and the slab, as well as upgrading the Fire Safety Systems (SSI) to standards. A crucial point for users: the underground parking lot will undergo compliance work to allow it to reopen as quickly as possible.
The environmental aspect plays a central role in this project. The energy renovation includes maintaining the connection to the district heating network of La Coupiane, while rebuilding the substations and replacing the emitters. Thermal comfort will be significantly improved thanks to the cooling of the theater, the cinema, and the "Le Président" building.
Air quality has not been forgotten, with the installation of dual-flow ventilation systems and mechanical ventilation (VMC) in the restrooms.
RECONFIGURATION The project is not limited to bringing the facilities up to standard; it rethinks circulation and synergies between services.
The "Le Président" building will undergo a complete renovation, including adapting the load-bearing capacity of the floors to its new uses. The Archives department will also be renovated and extended, with the notable creation of a shared "Médiathèque – Archives" access point to ease visitor movement. On the live performance side, the Theater and Cinema complex will undergo a partial restructuring.
On the agenda: thermal insulation of the halls, transformation of the shared entrance, and the creation of a dedicated logistics access point for the theater.
The project also focuses on vacant or outdated spaces. The former night club "La Tomate" will undergo complete gutting. A budget option of €1.7 million is also on the table to set up multi-purpose rooms there.
Outside, the slab will be redeveloped and the old disused swimming pool will make way for a planted area, bringing a touch of greenery to the complex.
The site will also retain a single caretaker's apartment.
SCHEDULE AND FUNDING The cost of the project is estimated at €17.7 million. This amount includes a firm phase of €12.5 million, to which are added two options: €3.5 million for the médiathèque and €1.7 million for the layout of "La Tomate".
Regarding the provisional schedule, the studies and administrative authorizations phase will run from March 2026 to March 2027. The actual work is expected to start in the second quarter of 2027, with delivery expected in the second quarter of 2029.
