The Gendarmerie paid tribute to everyday heroes
The Gendarmerie nationale paid a double tribute to its officers who died in service and to everyday heroes, illustrating its commitment.
The Gendarmerie nationale organized, within the François Duchatel barracks, headquarters of the departmental group of Var, a ceremony marked by solemnity and remembrance. This event aimed to honor the memory of the military personnel who died in the line of duty, while highlighting the daily bravery of those who continue to serve the République. A double commemoration that reaffirms the fundamental values of the institution.
TRIBUTE TO FALLEN SOLDIERS In the presence of numerous civil, military, and judicial authorities, the tribute to the gendarmes who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives was a moment of deep emotion. Local elected officials, security force leaders, as well as representatives of patriotic and memorial associations joined active, reserve, and retired personnel of the Arme to show their respect and support. In a poignant silence, the names of the fallen were read out, reminding everyone of the total commitment and inherent risks of the profession of gendarme.
The ceremony was enhanced by the presence of around twenty flag-bearers, forming a particularly moving guard of honor. Carried with pride by members of associations such as the UNPRG (Union Nationale des Personnels et Retraités de la Gendarmerie), the Médaille Militaire, or the ACSPMG (Histoire et Patrimoine de la Gendarmerie), but also by cadets of the gendarmerie, these banners symbolized the continuity of republican memory. After the laying of wreaths and a poignant sounding of the 'Aux Morts', a minute of silence allowed the assembly to pay their respects.
RECOGNITION OF THE NATION Beyond the duty of remembrance, this ceremony was also an opportunity to salute excellence and dedication. Seven deserving personnel were thus presented with decorations, testifying to the Nation's recognition of their exemplary commitment. This powerful moment reaffirmed the values that drive every gendarme, summarized by the motto "Pour la Patrie, l'Honneur et le Droit".
It serves as a reminder that behind every uniform are women and men whose primary vocation is to protect the population and serve the institutions.
In parallel to these tributes to the fallen, the Gendarmerie celebrated the acts of bravery of its personnel in barracks throughout France. These actions, often carried out far from the spotlight, embody the institution's spirit of service. One of the most striking examples is that of Brigadier Clément Michaeli, a 26-year-old volunteer deputy gendarme assigned to the brigade of Tournon-sur-Rhône (Ardèche).
On June 14, while off duty, he showed exceptional courage in Tain-l'Hermitage (Drôme). Spotting a building engulfed in flames, he did not hesitate for a second. "At the foot of the building, I saw about ten people gathered, some filming the scene.
Flames were coming out of the ground floor windows and a three or four-year-old boy appeared on the 2nd floor, clearly unaware of the danger," he says. Without any equipment, he entered the smoke-filled building and managed to evacuate ten residents, including the young child, bringing them all to safety before the emergency services arrived. His heroic action, like dozens of others, will be honored, perfectly illustrating the constant commitment that characterizes the gendarmerie.
On this occasion Stéphane Rambaud, deputy for the 3rd constituency of Var, recalled the significance of this day: "It recalls the courage of these women and men who, on a daily basis, protect the population at the risk of their lives. Beyond the uniform, it is destinies, families, and personal commitments that are honored. Their sense of service, selflessness, and loyalty embody the deep values of the République.
This day invites everyone to remember that the security we enjoy rests on very real sacrifices. It is also a moment of solidarity towards their loved ones, who carry the legacy of their commitment. To pay tribute is to recognize that their mission goes beyond the individual to serve the common good.
It is also about passing on to future generations respect for those who choose to protect others. Their memory remains alive in traditions, ceremonies, and national recognition. On this February 16, the Nation bows with gratitude before its heroes in uniform."
