The anse Méjean site closed for work
The Ville de Toulon and the Métropole have launched emergency work at anse Méjean, closed to the public, to stabilize the cliff.
Following a series of intense meteorological episodes during the winter, the Ville and Toulon Provence Méditerranée (TPM) have initiated an emergency work operation to secure the cliff and the quay of anse Méjean. This major project, which became essential after several landslides, has led to the closure of the site to the public for an estimated period of three months. The objective is to guarantee user safety and allow for a lasting reopening of this emblematic site on the Toulon coastline.
The situation began to deteriorate between October 2025 and March 2026, a period during which exceptional weather conditions weakened the rocky massif overlooking the cove. Faced with proven risks of rockfalls, a municipal decree was issued on February 18, 2026, to ban access to the site, from the exit of the hameau de Méjean in the west to the descent of the chemin de la mer in the east. This was followed by a phase of detailed geotechnical studies, conducted from March 15 to April 14, to diagnose the condition of the cliff and define the interventions.
The findings confirmed the need for rapid action, leading to the activation of an urgent emergency procedure on April 15.
SEVERAL PHASES The work, which began on April 27, promises to be complex and is taking place in several coordinated stages. The first consists of scaling the cliff to remove all materials (rocks, soil) made unstable by the rains. Subsequently, the teams will proceed with the removal of structures and equipment damaged by ground movements.
The main part of the intervention focuses on installing consolidation devices, such as protective nets or anchors, to stabilize the rock face. Specific interventions are planned right by the quay, in zone 1, which has been identified as the most impacted by the landslides.
The cost of this securing operation is estimated at ‐715,000 including tax, an investment funded by the Ville and the Métropole. The duration of the work remains subject to technical and weather hazards. If the schedule is respected, the authorities aim for a partial reopening of the site by July 15, concerning zones 2, 3, and 4, which are less affected.
Zone 1, the most critical, could require additional work.
Throughout the duration of the intervention, the public access ban remains strict for safety reasons.
