La cérémonie était présidée par le secrétaire général de la préfecture, en présence des autorités civiles et militaires du département ainsi que des représentants des principales associations mémorielles qui œuvrent pour la préservation de cette histoire. Les patriotiques apportent une solennité particulière à l’événement. Au-delà des personnalités officielles, cette cérémonie était ouverte à tous les citoyens qui souhaitaient s’associer à cet hommage et réaffirmer leur attachement aux principes fondamentaux de la République, bâtis en opposition à la barbarie nazie et à la collaboration du régime de Vichy.
The Var Prefecture announced the holding of the official ceremony of the "National Day of Remembrance of the Victims and Heroes of Deportation". In Toulon, this solemn tribute took place at the Mémorial de la Déportation et de l'Internement, located on boulevard du 112ème Régiment d'infanterie in Toulon. The ceremony was presided over by the secretary general of the prefecture, in the presence of the civil and military authorities of the department as well as representatives of the main memorial associations working for the preservation of this history.
The flag-bearers of the patriotic associations bring a particular solemnity to the event. Beyond the official figures, this ceremony was open to all citizens who wished to join in this tribute and reaffirm their commitment to the fundamental principles of the Republic, built in opposition to Nazi barbarity and the collaboration of the Vichy regime.
DUTY OF REMEMBRANCE Established by the law of April 14, 1954, this national day is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of April throughout French territory. The date was chosen for its symbolic proximity to the anniversary of the liberation of most Nazi concentration and extermination camps in the spring of 1945. The objective of this commemoration is to pay a unanimous tribute to all victims of deportation, regardless of origin, belief, or commitment.
During the dark years of the Occupation, between 1940 and 1945, more than 150,000 people were torn from their homes in France and deported to death camps. Their fates were diverse but their suffering was shared: resistance fighters captured in battle, political opponents hunted for their ideas, trade unionists, and tens of thousands of people persecuted on racial grounds, including 76,000 Jews, of whom 11,000 were children, victims of the Shoah, as well as Tsiganes.
The ceremony aims to never forget their ordeal and to honor the sacrifice of those who never returned.
