La Région launches a plan to revive a struggling sector
La Région Sud, leader in organic farming, has adopted a 2026-2028 plan to consolidate its sectors and revive consumption.
The Conseil régional adopted on June 26, during its Assemblée Plénière, the “Plan Bio Régional 2026-2028”. This strategic initiative aims to support a sector facing a sharp slowdown in consumer demand and to consolidate the region's lead in this area.
With 35% of its utilized agricultural area (UAA) certified organic, the region has the best rate in France métropolitaine. This dynamism is reflected in more than 5,000 farms committed to the sector and the creation of some 11,500 non-permanent salaried jobs.
Although the area cultivated organically has doubled over the last decade, this momentum is currently slowed down by an unfavorable economic climate, marked by an erosion of consumption. This trend reversal weakens the economic balance of many producers.
THREE AXES
Developed in consultation with State services and professional stakeholders, from producers to distributors, the plan is structured around three clear priorities. The first objective is to revive the consumption of regional organic products, by strengthening short food supply chains and conducting promotional activities.
The second axis aims to consolidate existing sectors and support their development. Finally, the third pillar consists of helping farmers meet current challenges, whether economic, climatic, or environmental, in order to ensure the resilience and profitability of their farms.
This plan is a continuation of an already well-established support. La Région Sud devotes nearly €1.3 million each year to the development of organic farming. These funds notably finance the support of farms, the structuring of sectors, or research projects.
Through this new roadmap, the regional executive intends to maintain a high-performing organic agriculture, creating value, rooted in the territories and playing a central role in the food sovereignty of the region.
“Organic farming is an opportunity for our territory. It allows us to create value, preserve our resources, and meet the expectations of inhabitants. With this plan, La Région Sud chooses to stand alongside farmers and structure solid sectors, to sustainably anchor organic farming in our territories,” indicates the Région.
