As part of the "Quartiers d’été" operation, the Chœur de l’Opéra de Toulon offered a tour of three free open-air lyrical concerts. From July 15 to 17, it led a concert tour in priority neighborhoods, a cultural initiative that gathered a large audience.

The closing concert, on Place de la Fraternité in La Garde, attracted nearly 300 people.

Democratizing opera

Under the direction of Christophe Bernollin, chorus master, and accompanied on the piano by Isa Fleur, the choir members offered a musical journey through the greatest arias of the lyrical repertoire.

The audience discovered famous works by Italian and French composers, from Verdi to Rossini, including Gounod, Bizet, Offenbach and even Ennio Morricone.

The tour began on July 15 in the Berthe neighborhood in La Seyne-sur-Mer, continued on July 16 at the Toulon Centre social center (La Visitation neighborhood), and ended on July 17 in the Romain-Rolland neighborhood in La Garde.

By making these concerts free at the heart of living spaces, the Opéra broke down barriers and shared the magic of classical music.

This initiative was part of the national "Quartiers d’été" scheme, supported by the Préfecture du Var. This program finances cultural, sports, or educational projects led by associations and local authorities for the benefit of residents in priority neighborhoods.

Engagement

The objectives are to foster intergenerational encounters, strengthen living together, promote civic values, or encourage youth engagement and equality between women and men. The tour integrated into this approach by making culture a tool for social cohesion.

Beyond the artistic performance, these evenings were moments of sharing. Families, children, youth, and seniors gathered to enjoy a high-quality show.

In the end, the Chœur de l’Opéra illustrated how culture, when it steps outside its walls, becomes a powerful vector of proximity and social connection.
