Remembrance and popular fervor for the 82nd anniversary

Between contemplation and popular jubilation, the commune fervently celebrated the 82nd anniversary of its liberation.

This day of August 23 paid tribute to the fighters of August 1944, whose actions on strategic points like the Mont Coudon were decisive for the reconquest of Toulon and the progress of Allied forces in Provence.

A morning of contemplation and tributes

The commemorations began with a patriotic ceremony marked by solemnity. At square Oyhéréguy, the president of the local section of veterans, René-Claude Brivoal, laid a wreath at the foot of the stele of Commandant Alexandre Lofi.

He was accompanied by the mayor, Julien Argento, and Denise Lofi, daughter of the commander, as well as children from the Conseil municipal, symbolizing the transmission of memory to younger generations.

A procession, led by flag-bearers including Gémo Guildo, then set off through the town center. In total, eight wreath-layings punctuated this route of remembrance, honoring the commune's memorial sites.

Several personalities spoke, notably Maëlys Moron for the Fondation de la France Libre and Théo Bernhard, deputy of Bas-Rhin, present on this occasion. The first part of this memorial day ended with a vibrant Marseillaise performed by two teenage girls.

Historical parade and popular celebration

The afternoon gave way to a more festive atmosphere, while remaining anchored in history. At 5 p.m., the "Provence 44" parade brought the excitement of the Liberation back to life, with the parade of Jeeps and vintage military vehicles that delighted a large audience.

Starting at 6 p.m., the place du Général-de-Gaulle was transformed into a friendly space for the grand Liberation evening. Large tables, food trucks, and a musical lineup provided by a live band and a DJ set allowed Valettois of all generations to gather in a festive and warm atmosphere.

At nightfall, the residents took part in the traditional torchlight procession. After the distribution of lanterns by the Municipalité, the luminous procession made its way to the stade Félix-Rougier.

To close the celebrations, the grand fireworks display was replaced by a parade of LED lanterns, offering a modern and poetic visual show.

In short, this day fulfilled its mission, which was to remember those who fought for freedom, transmit their heritage, and strengthen the bonds that unite the community.
